The story is probably the best thing in the game, so I'll try to avoid potential spoilers.

To choose from, the player has four (and not three, as we might think from the name of the game) paths - each with its own unique story and characters and carries an essential part for understanding the overall picture of events.

At the beginning of the game, the future owners of Fodlan, the continent where the events of Three Houses take place, have no idea that their lands are on the verge of a new war. The Holy Kingdom of Fergus, the Adrestian Empire, and the Leukester Alliance have a long and rather bloody history of fighting among themselves. At the same time, on both sides of them, the church is desperately trying to maintain its influence, is waiting for the new coming of the messiah and is fighting schism in its ranks.

Our protagonist, Baylet, finds himself in such a turbulent world. He is a young mercenary who does not remember his past (because this is a very recent scenario) and has a certain connection with a mysterious entity and the Church. By the will of fate, he becomes a professor at the Garreg Mach Monastery, a kind of officer academy for nobles from all corners of Fodlan and people wealthy enough to afford such an education.

The player takes over the patronage of one of the three "faculties", the leader of which is one of the successors to the throne. The subsequent plot is based on this choice, and, frankly, there is plenty to choose from.

Edelgard, the leader of the house of the Black Eagle, and the future heir to the throne of the Adrestian Empire, is the only one who has understood the value of power and the weight of the crown since childhood, and what it really means to be a leader. She is cold and distant and will do anything to achieve her rather noble goal.

Dimitri, the leader of the House of Blue Lions and the future king of the Holy Kingdom, is collected and disciplined, hiding his true feelings deeply. He genuinely hates war and is rampaging through uselessly wasted lives.

Claude, the leader of the house of the Golden Deer, when he becomes the ruler of the republic of merchants and minor nobility, hides behind a mask of jokes and benevolence a schemer, a diplomat and a rather skilled military commander. His plans go much further than anyone could have suspected and he always keeps the full picture in his head.

The Fodlan world is full of events that raise quite "adult" topics - religiosity versus secularism, conflicts between different religious movements, enslavement of the weak, experiments on children, talent and hard work against "birthright" - it's interesting to watch, and there is something to think about.

However, there were some "buts" here too. The campaigns are unequal - if some reveal to us the causes of the global conflict and provide answers to key questions, then others (especially if you play them first) release a lot of context and are written, in general, somewhat weaker.

Each campaign lasts approximately 60 hours and has a similar trend. For the first 20 hours, the plot only gets better and ends with a wonderful climax. The next 20-30 hours are frankly monotonous, although with pleasant inclusions from the beginning of the game. And only at the end does the campaign "pick up the pace" again and dot the I's.
